The Payroll Trojan Horse: Inside Bandhan Bank’s 1-Lakh Credit Card Gambit

In a decisive step toward completing its transformation from a microfinance-heavy institution into a full-service universal private lender, Bandhan Bank Limited has announced an aggressive expansion of its proprietary credit card business.

During the bank’s Q2 FY27 earnings disclosure, Managing Director & CEO Partha Pratim Sengupta confirmed that the bank is on track to issue approximately 1,00,000 credit cards by the end of FY27. Remarkably, since formally rolling out the programme on August 23, 2026, the lender has already issued 34,000 credit cards in roughly 60 days—securing over a third of its target in its first two months of commercial operation.

Rather than viewing credit cards merely as high-yield revolving credit lines, Sengupta’s strategy positions the card as a Trojan horse to capture high-margin corporate salary packages and accelerate low-cost CASA accretion.

1. The Strategic Imperative: The Corporate Salary Moat

For years, Bandhan Bank faced a structural disadvantage when pitching to corporate treasurers and human resource departments:

Corporate Salary Mandate=Digital Payroll App+Instant Overdraft+Zero-Fee Credit Card\text{Corporate Salary Mandate} = \text{Digital Payroll App} + \text{Instant Overdraft} + \mathbf{\text{Zero-Fee Credit Card}}Corporate Salary Mandate=Digital Payroll App+Instant Overdraft+Zero-Fee Credit Card

  • The Missing Link: While Bandhan Bank offered competitive savings interest rates and robust digital banking, corporate clients routinely rejected bids because the bank lacked an integrated proprietary credit card suite.
  • The CASA Dividend: Corporate salary accounts represent the holy grail of bank liability franchises:
    • Zero-cost float during monthly payroll processing.
    • Sticky savings balances that are far less sensitive to interest rate hikes than retail fixed deposits.
    • Natural pipelines for pre-approved home loans and auto financing.

By deploying four specialized variants tailored to entry-level professionals, corporate frequent travellers, and senior executives, Bandhan Bank now possesses the full product stack necessary to bid against Tier-1 private peers.

2. De-Risking the Asset Book: The Post-MFI Roadmap

Since its banking inception in 2015 under founder Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, Bandhan Bank's greatest strength—and its primary valuation discount—was its Emerging Entrepreneurs Business (EEB) group microfinance portfolio:

MetricHistorical Profile (2018–2022)Modern Target Architecture (FY27+)

Loan Mix

60% Unsecured Micro-Credit (EEB)

Diversified Retail, Secured Housing, MSME, Cards

Geographic Bias

Heavy concentration in West Bengal & Assam

Pan-India Urban & Semi-Urban Expansion

Asset Quality Risk

Vulnerable to floods, political debt-waivers

Balanced across salaried secured borrowers

Liability Base

Retail Term Deposits (High Cost of Funds)

Low-cost Corporate Payroll CASA Float

Under Partha Pratim Sengupta (former MD & CEO of Indian Overseas Bank and seasoned SBI commercial banker), the mandate is to bring the microfinance share down toward ~35% to 40%, replacing it with granular retail assets and corporate relationships.

3. Execution & Risk Calibration in a Tightening RBI Climate

The timing of Bandhan Bank's credit card ramp-up comes as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) maintains strict vigilance over unsecured consumer lending:

  • Higher Risk Weights: Central bank mandates requiring 125% risk weights on unsecured consumer loans demand higher capital allocation.
  • Measured Sizing: Aiming for 1 lakh cards by FY27 is deliberately conservative compared to aggressive private peers issuing millions annually. This measured pace prevents early-cohort delinquency spikes and allows the bank to calibrate risk against verified corporate salary inflows.
  • Internal Cross-Sell: The primary target for the initial 1 lakh cards will be existing, KYC-verified deposit customers whose cash flows and repayment behaviors are already visible in Bandhan Bank’s core banking ledger.

Why it matters

The FinSamudra View

Bandhan Bank’s rapid issuance of 34,000 cards in 60 days demonstrates the pent-up cross-sell potential within its existing 3-crore-plus customer franchise.

Under CEO Partha Pratim Sengupta, the credit card is not being treated as a speculative consumer debt product, but as an institutional bridge to corporate payroll deposits. If Bandhan Bank can successfully parlay its card portfolio into corporate salary market share, it will systematically lower its blended cost of funds and secure the structural re-rating public markets have awaited.
