India's largest bank is spinning off its mutual fund business in what could be one of 2025's biggest public offerings, signalling renewed investor appetite for fund management platforms.

SBI Mutual Fund, which manages ₹7.5 lakh crore in assets under management, is set to file its IPO prospectus by mid-February with a listing target of April. This marks the first major bank-backed mutual fund to go public in recent years, and the scale of the business underlines why the market is watching closely.

The move comes as India's mutual fund industry posted 40% AUM growth in FY24, reflecting strong retail participation in equity and savings-linked schemes. SBI MF's size—among the top three fund houses in the country—means its public listing will carry weight as a market confidence signal.

For retail investors, direct shareholding in an MF platform offers exposure to India's structural shift from savings to investments. The IPO will establish a fresh valuation benchmark that other fund houses, whether bank-backed or independent, will use for their own capital-raising decisions.

The timing is deliberate: SBI's decision to unbundle its MF arm reflects confidence in the recurring revenue model of fund management—asset management fees, performance incentives, and investor relationships that are less cyclical than lending.

Why it matters

For DSAs and loan connectors, SBI MF's IPO is a signal that India's financial infrastructure is maturing. Banks are now confident enough to monetise non-lending arms, which means more capital flowing into distribution and technology platforms. This typically precedes expansion in lending DSA networks and tie-ups with smaller players.

For mutual fund distributors and investors using DSAs for loan origination, the IPO underlines that the savings and investment ecosystem is deepening alongside credit growth. As fund houses go public and raise capital, they invest more in digital distribution, creating indirect opportunities for financial connectors managing borrower journeys.
