As of June 30, 2025, Indian banks are holding ₹67,000 crore in unclaimed deposits—money that has remained untouched in savings and current accounts for over a decade or in fixed deposits unclaimed for 10+ years after maturity. The government disclosed the figure in Lok Sabha, highlighting a quiet pool of dormant wealth spread across the country's banking system.

Public sector banks dominate the unclaimed pool with ₹58,330.26 crore (87% of the total). SBI leads all lenders with ₹19,329.92 crore, followed by PNB at ₹6,910.67 crore and Canara Bank at ₹6,278.14 crore. Private banks account for ₹8,673.72 crore, with ICICI holding ₹2,063.45 crore, HDFC ₹1,609.56 crore, and Axis ₹1,360.16 crore.

Under the Depositor Education and Awareness (DEA) Fund Scheme, 2014, these inactive balances are eventually transferred to an RBI-managed fund. The mandate ensures unclaimed wealth does not languish indefinitely while rightful claimants remain unaware.

To help depositors trace their money, the RBI launched the UDGAM portal (Unclaimed Deposits Gateway to Access Information) in June 2025. By July 1, 2025, over 8.59 lakh users had already registered on the platform to search dormant accounts across multiple banks—a sign that awareness is building.

The portal allows individuals to check if they or their family members have unclaimed funds sitting in banks. It represents a step toward financial inclusion by making it easier for depositors to recover their own money without navigating multiple bank websites or filing separate claims.

Why it matters

For loan agents and DSAs, unclaimed deposits signal a large pool of potential borrowers with latent purchasing power. Many depositors don't realise funds are dormant and could use that money for productive credit. As the UDGAM portal drives awareness, agents can position personal loans and credit lines as ways to access liquidity without long claim procedures.

Banks and lenders face pressure to improve their outreach and account servicing—dormant balances tie up capital and create regulatory compliance overhead. The concentration of unclaimed funds in public sector banks suggests operational gaps in customer communication and retention. DSAs and fintech connectors can help fill that gap by educating borrowers about their own financial assets and linking them to credit products that meet real need.
