Visa has officially launched Visa Payment Passkey in India. IDFC FIRST Bank is the first issuer to roll out the solution to its cardholders.

Instead of typing in an OTP sent by SMS, customers can now authenticate eligible online card transactions using Face ID, fingerprint, or their device PIN.

Visa frames this as part of a broader shift from password-based payments to device-based trust, where the smartphone itself becomes the authentication key.

For banks, merchants, and fintech companies, the stated benefits include faster checkout, fewer abandoned transactions, stronger protection against phishing and OTP fraud, and higher transaction success rates.

Why it matters

For connectors and DSAs who push customers toward co-branded cards and card-linked lending products, checkout friction directly affects conversion. If passkey authentication reduces abandonment at the payment step, that improves the completion rate on card-based offers sourced through the channel.

For issuers and NBFCs, OTP-related fraud and failed authentications are a recurring cost and support burden. A device-based authentication layer that IDFC FIRST Bank has now adopted signals where other issuers may follow, and DSAs sourcing cards for partner banks should expect this to become a standard onboarding and servicing feature over time.
