The Allianz Global Insurance Report 2026 forecasts India's total premium income will expand at 10.7% annually through 2036. This growth rate will exceed India's projected nominal GDP growth, signalling deepening insurance penetration across the entire economy.

Despite ranking in the global top 10, India remains significantly underinsured. Insurance penetration stands at just 3.8% of GDP, creating a structural runway for sustained sector expansion over the coming decade.

Three macro tailwinds are driving this growth: rising middle-class incomes and financialization of savings; increasing life expectancy and shifting demographics; and post-pandemic awareness of gaps in public social protection. These factors are creating both urgency and capacity for insurance adoption.

Life insurance currently commands 74% of the premium pool, but health insurance is the fastest-growing segment. High medical inflation and rising awareness are accelerating health insurance adoption across income brackets.

The insurance deepening comes at a time when Indian households are increasingly looking beyond credit into protection products. For the lending ecosystem—DSAs, connectors, and banks—this signals opportunity to cross-sell protection alongside credit solutions.

Why it matters

For DSAs and loan connectors, the insurance boom creates direct and indirect revenue streams. Cross-selling health or life insurance to borrowers improves portfolio quality and customer retention. Banks and NBFCs can embed protection into credit products, reducing default risk while capturing insurance commissions. The 10.7% CAGR represents a shift in how credit and protection are bundled in India's financial services.

The faster growth of health insurance is particularly relevant for lenders in the working-capital and personal-loan space. As medical inflation rises and employer-provided coverage gaps widen, borrowers increasingly need standalone health policies. Connectors who position health insurance alongside credit products will capture higher wallet share and build stickier customer relationships.
