RBI extends Keki Mistry's interim HDFC Bank chairmanship to September 2026

After clearing the bank of any wrongdoing in its Chairman's abrupt resignation, HDFC Bank opts to extend its interim leader rather than rush a permanent successor.

HDFC Bank's Chairman resigned abruptly in March over unspecified "ethical deviations," unsettling markets. The bank brought in corporate veteran Keki Mistry on an interim basis and commissioned three independent law firms to review internal communications.

The investigation concluded with a clean chit: the law firms found zero merit to the allegations against the former Chairman.

Rather than move quickly to appoint a permanent Chairman once cleared legally, HDFC Bank's board sought and received RBI approval to extend Mistry's interim tenure to September 2026.

The bank's rationale, per the board's approach: a hurried permanent appointment right after a governance crisis can unsettle investors, while a steady interim hand gives the search committee an unpressured runway to vet a permanent successor.

Why it matters

For DSAs and lenders, leadership stability at India's largest private bank matters for continuity in credit policy, sourcing norms, and partner relationships. A prolonged, deliberate transition signals the board is prioritising governance rigour over optics, which reduces the risk of abrupt policy shifts that could disrupt distribution channels.

For connectors and borrowers, a bank moving cautiously on top leadership after a cleared governance scare is a signal of institutional stability rather than distress — relevant when assessing counterparty risk on large lending relationships tied to HDFC Bank.
