Tata Capital has acquired an 88.6% stake in Kerala-based Yogloans (Yogakshemam Loans) at a ₹318 crore valuation, marking the conglomerate's formal entry into gold lending. The deal brings with it ₹708 crore in gold loan AUM and 162 operating branches across South India on day one.

Gold lending is a highly localized, high-trust business. It requires physical branches, specialized security infrastructure, and staff trained to verify gold purity on-site. Building this network from scratch takes years. By acquiring Yogloans, Tata Capital avoids the long ramp-up period and inherits 32,000 customers already embedded in the franchise.

This acquisition arrives as the Reserve Bank of India has tightened oversight of unsecured consumer loans—personal loans and credit cards. Gold loans, being asset-backed and higher-yielding, offer a more resilient portfolio hedge. For Tata Capital, the move repositions the balance sheet toward products less vulnerable to regulatory tightening.

The entry marks a rare moment: a corporate-scale player challenging the duopoly of Muthoot Finance and Manappuram Finance, which have long dominated India's gold loan market. Tata Capital brings scale, capital, and distribution muscle that smaller competitors cannot replicate.

Why it matters

For DSAs and loan agents, Tata Capital's entry signals a major shift in lending economics. Gold loans carry lower default risk than unsecured products and command higher interest spreads. Agents working with NBFC partners now face a formidable new competitor with superior brand trust and branch density—particularly in South India, where Tata Capital can leverage Yogloans' existing footprint to cross-sell other products.

For lenders and connectors, the move underscores the migration away from unsecured credit and toward collateral-backed lending. As RBI continues to tighten personal loan and credit card norms, gold loans emerge as a growth frontier. Tata Capital's capital-backed entry will likely accelerate competitive intensity and margin pressure in the segment, pushing smaller players to specialize or exit.
