HSBC India reported a pre-tax profit of $965 million for the first half of 2026, a 4% increase year-on-year, with the bulk of earnings concentrated in its wholesale franchise.

Corporate and Institutional Banking generated $792 million in pre-tax profit — over 82% of HSBC's total earnings in India. The bank attributed the resilience to wholesale credit for large Indian conglomerates, global MNC subsidiaries and cross-border trade corridors, which delivered steady net interest and fee income.

On deposits, HSBC led all commercial banks in India by raising $6.14 billion under the RBI's concessional FCNR(B) dollar swap window. It also expanded on the ground, taking its branch network from 26 to 46 and adding nearly 2,000 employees to service high-net-worth wealth and commercial clients.

Retail wealth management faced margin pressure over the period, but wholesale banking and cross-border trade finance produced high-margin returns, keeping India among HSBC Group's most profitable global franchises.

Why it matters

The concentration of profit in corporate and trade-finance lines underlines why global banks keep deepening their India presence around wholesale rails rather than mass retail. For the lending ecosystem, it signals that the most contested — and most profitable — ground remains large-corporate credit, forex and cross-border flows.
