Generali-CBI JV targets ₹2,000 Cr premiums in 36 months with AI-backed expansion

The life insurer aims to double collections from ₹964 Cr by leveraging Central Bank of India's branch network and a new Digital Smart Manager platform across Tier 2-4 cities.

The Generali Italia and Central Bank of India joint venture has unveiled an aggressive three-year roadmap to capture share in India's underserved insurance markets. The plan centres on doubling premium collections to ₹2,000 crore—a 100% increase on the FY26 closing figure of ₹964 crore.

The strategy rests on bancassurance. By tapping CBI's pan-India branch network, the insurer will push deeper into Tier 2, Tier 3, and Tier 4 cities where penetration remains low and demand for life cover is rising but underserved by traditional channels.

Central to execution is the Digital Smart Manager (DSM), a new AI-driven platform launched to equip bank staff and advisors with tools to assess customer financial needs and streamline policy sales. The platform aims to reduce friction in the advisory process and speed up conversions at scale.

This move reflects a broader shift in Indian life insurance: growth no longer lies in metro-heavy channels. Emerging markets offer untapped pools of salaried and self-employed customers seeking affordable term and endowment products. The JV's tech-first approach positions it to move faster than traditional models.

By automating advisory workflows through DSM, the partnership can serve more customers per branch without proportional cost increases—a key lever for hitting ₹2,000 Cr while maintaining unit economics in smaller towns.

Why it matters

For DSAs and loan agents in fintech: this signals how legacy financial players are now moving into adjacent lending segments with bancassurance as a beachhead. Insurance and credit are increasingly bundled in customer journeys, especially in Tier 2+ markets. Agents should expect insurers to compete for shelf space on their customer lists—understanding this product now will be table stakes.

For NBFCs and lenders: the move shows that branch-light models and AI-driven underwriting are becoming the norm even for traditional insurers. If Generali is deploying DSM to cut advisory cost per customer, expect similar tools across lending. Lenders need to prepare for tighter margins and faster innovation cycles as legacy players automate operations in smaller towns.
